Company 95 was dispatched to the Railroad tracks near the Mill Street crossing for a brush fire at 1410 hours. On arrival crews found a large are burning along the tracks and up the hill toward houses on Jonica Drive. Crews quickly stopped the spread and then extinguished the fire.
The fire was likely caused by the train passing by right before the fire was called in as the metal wheels against the metal tracks do sometimes cause sparks and with all the dry leaves it can easily cause a fire and the crew watches for this but it sometimes occurs long after they are gone. Railroad management was notified of the fire and asked to hold the train until the fire was extinguished which they did and they sent personnel to the scene to assure they knew when it was safe to send the train.
BAF&R remained on scene until the train passed heading south to Pottstown and crews were surprised when the train stopped and the firefighters were handed a large box of cookies and received many thanks for our efforts in getting the fire extinguished quickly.
BAF&R was assisted at scene by Eastern Berks Regional Police
