Company 95 was dispatched to the area of 124 North Walnut Street at approximately 0830 hours for a gas line that was struck by an excavator that was leaking. Crews arrived on scene and found that the levels of gas in the area were at explosive levels and UGI was contacted for permission to shut down the main. UGI would not authorize shutting down the Main until a supervisor arrived on location so additional companies were dispatched to assist with evacuation of the area. 8 homes were evacuated affecting approximately 15 persons. UGI supervisor arrived on location and authorized the shut down of the Main and BAF&R then turned the scene over to UGI to make the repairs. BAF&R was assisted by Gilbertsville Fire & Rescue as well as Fire Police from Eastern Berks.Boyertown Police remained on scene until the scene was safe.
